The writing center
When our class went to the writing center on thursday, it helped me understand how to structure my essay better and how I could add information to my essay with good transitons. I had many questions when coming into the writing center and my writing tutor help me a lot. She explained how I could proceed with my essay by connecting the interview I did with my business professors with my future goals and where I see myself in 5 years. Like this I was able to write some ideas down on how I could continue with my essay. I really liked going to the writng center for questions I had on my essay and knowing how I could improve on my writing. I could see myself going to the writing center more frequently when I need help on my wrting or I'm having difficulty starting or understanding the assingment. I think its great help going to the writing center for students who want to improve on their writing.
Sparrow Needy/The City that Bleeds Review
Pleasantly surprised I was when I read Sparrow Needy. It was entertaining and well written. The narrative was also intriguing especially the dynamic contrast between Paul and the narrator. While reading it also made me realize how your environment often takes a bigger toll on you that most imagine. Yet we often look down upon people in our real lives that resemble the character of Lynwood. Yet Lynwood played a pivotal role and almost guided the narrator to achieve brilliance. The unorthodox/ironic element is what made this essay enjoyable for me.
The City that Bleeds in the other hand was the complete opposite. It was dry and boring and had a horrible narrative. There was no sense of emotions and although the topic was rather extremely serious since it touches on the injustice in Baltimore I felt the actual writing was an injustice to the situation. Often times where the situation is so severe and critical you would need to gauge the attention of readers to gain the situation attention to provoke change where this did the exact opposite and bored me to the point that I just wanted to not finish the essay.

Sparrow Needy
The introduction of the essay Sparrow Needy is helping us to understand more about the plot of the essay and also it's telling us about the characters that involve the story. One of the characters is the author's brother, Paul, who had a disgusting experience when he was young with Lynwood (the other main character). With this, you can clearly know more about the relationship between them (the characters), their personalities and their attitudes towards each other. Therefore, the first paragraph introduces the characters of Paul and Lynwood. There you can have a clear image of who is Lynwood and his role in the story. Also in the next part of the introduction, the author describes his brother, his thoughts about him and the way he sees him. The characters are an essential part of the story. This three-character develop the plot in a way that the story tells us the different experiences between them and how their lives are connected to each other.
The conclusion in this essay is more like final thoughts of the author about his brother. The author is showing us his feelings about his brother. The way that he's showing us is when he said he wrote a book dedicated to his brother and how he shared it with him. Clearly, there were things that he didn't know about his brother because he thought that he'd not read the book but at the end, his brother read it and appreciated, even though he didn’t express it. You can see this because Paul kept the book even after two years. In the end, the author's brother was very important to him and even after his death he still remembers him. The conclusion shows a sad tone. The way the author refers the death of his brother, also he realized that his brother read the book that he dedicated him and he didn't get the opportunity to talk about it and finally the last sentence transmits that the author really misses his brother.

The opening of this essay starts with a specific topic about violence. For example, kidnappings and murders. The author describes his neighborhood Harlem, but most importantly, he describes his brother and his childhood. Paul was an ordinary boy with talents and a friendly boy.I think that the most dramatic part of the introduction is when the author tells us about his brother's experience.When Paul was eight years, he saw a murder in front of his house. We notice from the beginning that this chapter is going to be about his brother. In the conclusion, the author end up talking about how his brother passed away. I like when he mentioned that he dedicated his last poem to his brother twenty-six years ago.

Even though we dont know who really killed those people, lives were still taken so its safe to assume Harlem is not a safe area to be in.

Sparrow needy introduced itself by giving us an overview about Harlem and his brother Paul. He set the scene by telling us about his neighborhood bully Lynwood and how he killed someone in a brutal shooting and how his brother Paul witnessed it just a couple ft away. It set a tone about his brother as he talks about him in past tense.
during the conclusion he gives us a fast forward on his life and how it ended up even without his brother. it seems that he still doesn't seem to understand his brother's life fully and why he did the things he did. although he felt as if he didn't understand his life, he was still very close to him.

in the introduction the writer makes the brother seem as a respect young kid unlike his classmates. he also made us see how mature he was for his age since he has been in a lot of mishaps at a very young age.
the tone of the conclusion made me feel sad for Kenneth. since he lost his brother, he was told by his parents to gather up some of his things and by doing that he saw that his brother kept the book he dedicated to Paul and Kenneth does not know if he read it or if he did or even liked it.

My thoughts about the introduction for "Speedy Narrow" is that the author was giving us background information about how life was in Harlem for him and his brother and everyone else. He was also setting the tone for the rest of the story. The tone was suspenseful and how life was for them.
My thoughts on the conclusion is that I liked how he told us where in life he is now. I also liked how vulnerable he was when he was talking about Paul. Paul talking about the time when he went to a club, probably talking about the time he saw the murder when he was eight. The last poem he published was twenty six years ago talking about Paul.

I feel like the opening was great the author created a scene in front of my eyes that he is having a conversation in a New York bus.i really liked the way author expressed the city Harlem and what kind of neighborhood he was living in introduction shows Paul brother plays an important role in the story.
conclusion
author expressed all the last moment conversation he had with his brother and he also told that his parents died and now he is married to a kind women.He expressed that his brother was really supportive and was always there in his good and bad In the ending of the essay he is missing his brother and telling that this is how life works. In the very ending he says that it was his last poem he published and was written twenty six years old.

After reading the first few paragraphs of the essay"Sparrow Needy", the opening just mentioned a murder, Lynwood, killed someone. Then, it talked about his brother, Paul. Absolutely, I was confused which person was related to the topic on earth?
As for the ending, the author told me the truth of the story that Lynwood wasn't the real murder which made me surprised. Also, the ending, the author left many assumption about his life to let me think about. Although there was complex relationship between the author, Paul and Lynwood, these two people still had profound influence on the author.
HW Response to Sparrow Needy..
Paul being friends with custodians definitely is extraordinary. Even at a young age, he would speak to adults more because of his maturity and "old soul". Paul wasn't an average kid because of what he experienced as a young boy that changed his mind and the way he goes about life. Most kids his age would only talk to their friends and not too much with adults.

When "Sparrow Needy" opens up were given the premise of the story. Harlem New York. The epigraph hints at the ambiance that the essay will reveal. " I had a brother, and that says it all." The mood is already gloomy and as we go along with the intro we start to hear about Baldwin. We almost paint a picture of the busy streets of New York. Grey from the buildings and yellow from the taxis. In the first line the author speaks on how tough the neighborhood was. We hear there was a murder which was concrete true and then rumors of other violent acts. Grimey and tough is all you get.
The conclusion on the other hand is somewhat still tough but heartfelt. We now know that Paul is gone but as the narrator tells us on page 25 the story of the uneasy bar. It shows the vulnerability that Paul always had. When Paul is at a lost of outcomes Lynwood comes in the bar and rushes the pusher out of the bar. Paul then asked him to not hurt him. We see the fear in him and not to mention this is the only sentimental scene with Paul where he puts down his guard. The story comes in a circle in which Paul goes from a tough guy to vulnerable to either situations or his health. When he passes we see the last belongings of Paul. A few articles of clothes and a book that his brother gave him. The book entitled " To Hear the River" seems to be a personal touch. Paul through his hard tough life kept a book that his older brother dedicated to him. A soft spot. A spot so dear to him he took it to the grave. The irony in the ending may be the biggest literary device used. But in the end its still melancholy because after Paul's passing we know the narrator never had closure. Twenty six years and he never wrote about him again. They weren't able to fully close and you see how it affected the whole tone of the essay.
