With the introduction of "Sparrow Needy", the author is setting the tone for the rest of the story. He starts out with what he recalled from growing up in Harlem, diving straight into how the neighborhood bully, Lynwood, was guilty of killing someone in a shooting. He provides background information and there's this sense of suspense. The author also talks about his brother and his love for him which is a common  theme throughout the essay.

As for the conclusion, the author shares a moment of vulnerability that Paul had when talking about the incident at the club. The author noted that sharing things so personally like that was a rare occurrence, if it ever happened. He ends Paul's narrative with the mention of his death and the feeling of finding one of the books he had given him in a yellow carton. It's a moment of reflection for the author and a moment of that leaves the reader in thought. He uses Paul and himself as a comparison of what could happen if someone goes on the same route that he does (drugs, alcoholism) , and what could happen with the support of someone like Lynwood by their side. For the author, he managed to get out of Harlem, find true success, and live a fulfilling life.
