So what do you make of Heather Sellers' father in "Haywire"? How do you reconcile his seeming performance of manhood (attracted to women, wears boots and jeans, watches hetero porn, etc.) and his dressing in women's underwear? On p. 240, Sellers writes, "What was he?" Why is that important to define? How did you react to the end of the essay?
For Sellers, the fact that her father was "haywire," or strange, had a profound affect on her. Why do you think that is?
We're all writing about our college experience (and what led up to it). What did college, and then graduate school and then being a professor, symbolize for Sellers? How is that similar and/or different from what school symbolizes for you?
