I never would've considered myself a blogger, say for the one or two anti-trump rants i may post around election time on Facebook. Be that as it may this blog may just help cure my writers block and help me adjust to writing again. Not having been in school over a decade isn't helping much either. If given the choice i much prefer reading over writing. I usually come up short with words since i like to keep things as short and concise as i can. Yet after meeting professor Tailbird and going through the syllabus i feel informed confident and knowledgeable going into the semester. I look forward to improving my writing and reading comprehension and interacting with you all this year.
Welcome to the blog for Prof. John Talbird's English 101 class. The purpose of this site is two-fold: 1) to continue the conversations we start in class (or to start conversations before we get to class) and 2) to practice our writing, reading, and thinking on a weekly basis in an informal setting.

syllabus entry
I've always enjoyed reading and writing and also the subject English itself, as each day goes by I'm enjoying the class a lot, i enjoy that at the end of the class we have "free writing", we get to write what we want to. as I read the syllabus the first day of school, I had gotten the idea that were going to be writing a lot and I for one am very excited, writing is a form of expressing feelings and a lot of us are not comfortable but I hope this class gives us the courage to change that.
I also enjoy that there's these blogs, I feel like its important to say how we feel about what we've been doing for the past week, whether we enjoyed the topic or not, we can say how we feel upon it. I'm looking forward to learning more things as the day goes by.

Syllabus Entry
Upon reading the syllabus I was able to gain an understanding of what to expect and how to plan for the upcoming events. That being said upon reading the syllabus I was glad to see a cohesive course that has already been planned for us. Besides the parts and chapters, we have to read I was gladder to see the grading formula to be more merciful than my other professors in which the four formal writing assignments count for 60%. The fact that over half our grade is in our hands and we have more liberty in those assignments is a highlight for myself and I assume my classmates.
My experience with reading and writing has been an interesting one for the most part of my life I was never interested in the idea of staring at a paper with words on them as they would bore me and make me sleepy. None the less I was always a proficient writer and during high school, I pursued writing as a hobby and later a role in a magazine. I had an online blog that my friend and I use to run but as I grew further away from the internet I became less interested in the idea of posting my writing to entertain others. Reading shifted from never reading and religiously not going to my English classes to a sudden awakening through a teacher who struck a chord in me. I was always into the creative arts more or less paintings, design, and film but the teacher helped me realize that literature is arguably the most prolific and superpower like art there is.

After reading the syllabus, I am quite excited for the semester! I personally enjoy talking and debating about difficult or "controversial" subjects that poke and prod at people's beliefs/ideologies. Growing up, I had many friends from many different walks of life, some of which I could have these discussions with, and others I could not. With some of those said friends, I'd have to "discuss television shows or movies" as you mentioned. Not that there's anything wrong with that, I do enjoy talking about shows or music that my friends and I consume. However, there is something more satisfying in discussing topics that are more substantial, topics that have a more tangible and real affect on everyday life. I'm looking forward to discussing these topics in class.
I am also looking forward to the group work! Lectures are nice for the classes that fit within my major, such as chemistry, ecology, bio-engineering, etc, but literature and writing are subjects that are better off being interpreted and discussed by yourself and others. The power of the opinion reigns supreme within the context of ideas in the spoken/written word, whereas in science, facts rule everything. There is no opinion on how it rains. It is fact that the sun causes water to evaporate, the particulates then condensate in the atmosphere, forming clouds, and then when there is too much concentrated, it is released in the form of rain. There is no room for interpretation. With works of literature, opinion is everything.
This is not my first rodeo with college. I went to a 4 year university out of state about 3 years ago when I graduated high school. I ended up having to drop out because I lost my scholarship due to my carelessness and interest in psychedelics (but that's another story). One of my classes was an English 101 class (naturally), and I didn't really vibe with or connect with the professor and her style. You, however, seem to be different and I believe that we will have a great semester together. Looking forward to it!
