Opening:
It's extraordinary that Paul would be friends with custodians. What does this say about him? Most kids would never speak to adults, let alone adults who clean up after them. He seems to have an "old soul."
I think this essay owes a debt to Baldwin and thus it's poetic that it comes to him at the end. One of Baldwin's most famous stories is "Sonny's Blues" (the story that inspires next week's music performance). It's about a young jazz player w/ chemical problems in Harlem. This essay very much makes me think of it.
