CHAPTER 14

I think sit-in is a kind of harmony movement without violence. It has a strong effect for the Civil Rights movement because it is a popular and effective tool for students to force the desegregation of restaurants and lunch counters.

As for the Norman Rockwell painting that Green writes about, It depicts Ruby, a six-year-old African American girl with a starched white dress and white ribbons in her hair, on her way to her school, a white school. From this painting, I can feel the threat and violence against the little girl. Especially, on the wall behind her is written the racial slur "nigger" and the letters "KKK"; a smashed and splattered tomato thrown against the wall is also visible. Also, I can feel the loneliness of the girl and the white protesters are angry about desegregation.
