- In what ways do these two essays examine subcultures?
- How did the authors present themselves in relation to the subculture that they examine? In other words, what is their ethos? How are they an authority about this subculture(s)?
- Both of these essays seem to be making certain political arguments too. What are they and how convincing, or not, are these arguments to you?
- What questions did these readings raise for you? (Try to answer one of your classmate's questions.)
Welcome to the blog for Prof. John Talbird's English 101 class. The purpose of this site is two-fold: 1) to continue the conversations we start in class (or to start conversations before we get to class) and 2) to practice our writing, reading, and thinking on a weekly basis in an informal setting.

How awful that Emily Maloney tried to kill herself and then immediately had to face the consequences of how she would pay for it. I think this essay is a great argument for why we need a single-payer health care system. Every single post-industrial country in the world besides for us has free health care for its citizens. People go broke b/c of this. And, curiously, nearly the only people who argue against it are wealthy politicians and entrepreneurs who have never had to worry about doing w/out and who never have to worry about their own daughter having to pay her hospital bills.
